Yesterday, the House Democrats staged a sit-down protest until the House Republicans change their minds about gun control.
I’m a firm believer in peaceful protesting but peaceful protesting is done as a way to give rights, not to take away rights. While gun violence has been a recent issue in the news between Christina Grimmie’s shooting and the Orlando massacre, the Second Amendment still stands.
At the end of the day, gun control creates more victims because it’s taking guns away from the law-abiding citizens. Criminals don’t care about the law so taking guns away from the people who know how to safely use guns is punishing the people who actually keep the law.
At some point last year, I saw a video that was gun-banning propaganda. The video talked about suicides and deaths that guns cause. The major issue with that video is that there will still be murders and suicides even if guns are banned. Japan is a country without guns and yet still has one of the highest suicide rates in the world.
I am not an advocate for gun violence by any stretch of the means. Guns are tools just as knives are tools—the reason for the tool changes depending who’s hand it’s in. In the case of the Orlando shooter, the gun was in wrong hands (and there is a ton of information about other illegal activity the shooter was doing before the massacre).
Will sitting on the House floor until a right that’s been in the Bill of Rights for the past few centuries ends up becoming obliterated happen? It’s sad seeing legislators openly support tyranny as a way to respond to tragedy.
